Patent offices and lawyers offer services to register trade marks, designs or patents not just on the national but also on the European or international level.

The Language of Trademarks course supports patent attorneys in Poland in developing their English language skills to handle IP protection matters on the international level more effectively and confidently.


The Language of Trade Mark | At a glance

The Language of Trade Marks is an on-line course directed to patent attorneys who would like to develop their English language skills in the context of the European Trade Marks (EUTMs). The course material is built around the trade mark registration procedure and post-registration matters – from filing an EUTM application to different scenarios which registered trade marks may follow. The various activities expose the course participants to the specific language used in the IP protection matters.

Duration: 8 weeks
Workload: 6-8 hours per week
Requirements: English B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF)
Certificate: Statement of accomplishment
Register: By invitation only! It is not possible to self-enrol in this course.

Course description

The context
Doing business with companies abroad and trading across national borders has become common practice for more and more companies. Protecting one’s own intellectual property is essential for the company’s success on the international level and global markets.

Patent offices and lawyers offer services to register trade marks, designs or patents not just on the national but also on the European or international level.

The Language of Trademarks course supports patent attorneys in Poland in developing their English language skills to handle IP protection matters on the international level more effectively and confidently.

Course aims
The main objective of this course is to develop English language skills to be able to operate more independently and with greater confidence in the field of European intellectual property protection procedures. Its main focus is on:

mastering the vocabulary and language used in the professional context of trade mark protection,


developing language and communication skills in the context of current practice, familiarizing students with the trade mark related procedures on the international – European level


promoting learner independence and self-directed learning.

Course content
The course The Language of Trademarks – the Basics consists of six weekly modules (“Lessons”).

Week 2: EUTM Examination Period

Week 3: Dealing with Opposition (Part 1)

Week 4: Dealing with Opposition (Part 2)

Week 5: Registration and What’s Next?

Week 6: Cancellation Procedures

Week 7: Appeals

Week 8: The A – Z of Trade Marks

Course elements
Each weekly lesson will consist of several elements:

a brief introduction and overview,

a review of previously studied vocabulary at the beginning of each week (from week 2),

various materials and exercises on the weekly topics (“Language tasks”),

one practical task (“Assignment”) at the end of the week, and

tips and recommendations for independent studies (“Take your learning into your own hands”).

Each participant is entitled to three 30-minute individual Skype language coaching sessions which will be available in the final weeks of the course and are to be scheduled individually with the course instructor in mid-course.

The Language of Trade Marks is offered in close co-operation with the Polish Chamber of Patent Attorneys (Polska Izba Rzeczników Patentowych, PIRP). Therefore  self-enrolment in this course is not possible.
